Meet The Artist

Hi, I’m Jonathan Dmitri Gabel. Thank you for taking a few minutes to look at my artwork and photography and to get to know me. My paintings and photos reflect life as I see it, revealing the magic within the ordinary. My influences come from moments during celebrations, people I see on the street, and the places I’ve been fortunate enough to live in and visit. Sometimes I just run into things that appear to be illuminated from within, like an abandoned truck or car resting in a field, and suddenly I have a scene in my mind that becomes either a painting or a photo.

I’m in my late twenties and it seems I’ve been painting my entire life. I was born in Russia and was adopted by my parents and came to the United States when I was three. My parents brought me back to Austin, Texas, where I lived for my first 9 years in the United States. From Austin we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and from Albuquerque to Washington D.C. Then a year abroad in Israel and upon my return I was off to Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV. After college I struck out for Durango, Colorado and most recently have moved to Philadelphia.

Seven moves. Some people might say that was a lot of moving around. I would probably agree, but to me every move was a new adventure—meeting new people, adjusting to new lifestyles, new experiences, etc. It’s been very exciting. And importantly, all these moves have had a significant impact on my art and photography. If you asked me of all the places I’ve lived, which has had the greatest influence on my artwork, I think it was my time in the Southwest. The colors I use remind me of traveling throughout Texas and New Mexico with my family. My fascination with old cars and trucks probably comes from the many rusting and abandoned old vehicles I saw along the way, and the mountainous background in my paintings represent my impression of the Colorado Rockies.

I’ve decided to so-to-speak “turn pro,” and make art my life work. I hope you enjoy my paintings and photos and will become a regular visitor to my website, jdg-art.com, or look for my work at ETSY, PIXELS, and some of the other platforms that are available.
