Meet The Artist

Hi, I’m Jonathan Dmitri Gabel, and I appreciate your time in exploring my artwork and photography. Through my paintings and photos, I strive to capture the enchantment inherent in everyday life. My creative vision is shaped by the moments of celebration, encounters with people on the street, and the diverse locations I have been fortunate to call home or visit. Sometimes, it’s the unexpected discovery of a seemingly illuminated object—an abandoned truck or car in a field—that sparks a vivid scene in my mind, inspiring a painting or photograph.

In my late twenties, I feel as though I have been painting my entire life. Born in Russia and adopted by my parents, I arrived in the United States at the age of three. Austin, Texas was our first home in the US, where I spent the first nine years of my life. From there, we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, then to Washington D.C. After a year abroad in Israel, I pursued my education at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV. Following college, I embarked on a journey that led me to Durango, Colorado, and most recently, Philadelphia.

Perhaps some would consider it a lot of moving around, but to me, each relocation has been an adventure—a chance to meet new people, adapt to different lifestyles, and gain fresh experiences. It has been an exhilarating journey, and each move has significantly influenced my artistic expression. If asked which place has had the greatest impact on my artwork, I would say it was my time in the Southwest. The colors I employ in my creations evoke memories of traveling through Texas and New Mexico with my family. My fascination with old cars and trucks likely stems from the numerous rusted, abandoned vehicles I encountered along the way, while the mountainous backdrops in my paintings reflect my impressions of the Colorado Rockies.

I have made the decision to fully embrace art as my life’s work. I hope you enjoy exploring my paintings and photos and that you become a regular visitor to my website.
